Spaxton is about five miles to the west of Bridgwater and was mentioned in Domesday as Spacheston. Hawkridge Reservoir lies about a mile and a half to the west at the foot of the Quantock Hills and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Bridgwater is set between the Mendip and Quantock Hills and lies below the Somerset Levels about eight miles north-east of Taunton. It was mentioned in Domesday as Brugie and had a mill on the River Parret and in the 12th century was known as Bridgwaltier. In the middle ages it was quiet an important port.
