The concept of The Hawthorns was pioneered in the early 1970s by the Holiday Retirement Corporation who manage over 250 similar facilities in North America. The private apartments are set around the main atrium which is the focus of the development and principal meeting and reception area. Here is the coffee lounge and library room, TV lounge, billiard and games room, and hairdressing salon. There is also an interdenominational chapel.
Once a week the Houskeeping staff change linen and towels and clean all apartments. The Hawthorns Mercedes coach takes residents into town for appointments and shopping most mornings during the week. On selected days excursions to places of interest nearby can be made and there is a regular programme of events from art and IT classes to Sittercize.
