Find retirement developments in some of the finest towns and villages in Buckingham
Buckingham : At the time of Domesday Buckingham was the capital of the county having been designated as such by Alfred the Great. It was fortified against the Danes in 913 by Edward the Elder and a mint was established here by Ethelred II. As an administrative centre Buckingham was poorly located and the medieval assizes were held at Aylsebury which became the county town.
Today Buckingham has some good shopping and recreational facilities and the old market square still retains its 18th century gaol. Buckingham is largely by-passed by several roads including the main A421 which skirts the south of the town and joins with the M1 at Junction 13 about sixteen miles to the east.
