Seaton was known as Flueta in Domesday and had a church and 11 salt-houses. The name 'Seaton' probably derives from 'farmstead by the sea'. For much of the Middle Ages it was an important port until the harbour silted up. The beach of shingle and pebbles is bordered by a long sea-wall built in 1980 after an exceptionally violent storm.
