Exeter is a cathedral city and the county town of Devon and was an important west country centre before the Romans came when it was called Exanceaster - 'Roman town on the River Exe'. Regularly sacked by the Danes it later flourished as a port with continental trade until the Countess Of Devon famously built a weir across the river. The town suffered considerable wartime damage but some of the old buildings around the cathedral precinct survived. The beautiful cathedral is reputed to have the longest span of unbroken Gothic rib vaulting and is also noted for magnificent roof bosses.?
The city centre has undergone a huge regeneration programme including the newly built Princesshay shopping centre with over 60 shops, seven restaurants and over 500 parking places. Theatres, museums, cinemas, libraries and art galleries are all within easy reach. Exeter is in the heart of the West Country surrounded by beautiful countryside and easy reach of moorland areas.
The M5 is about two miles to the east (Junctions 29 and 30). The south coast and Dartmoor National Park are both within easy driving distance. The mainline station connects with London (Waterloo) with frequent and fast trains.
