Sandown is on the southeast coast of the Isle of Wight below Bemridge with a long sandy beach and is a popular holiday destination. The area around Sandown Bay is well known for fossil hunting with the island reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of dinosaur fossils in the world. Sandown Pier is nearly 150 years old and has a range of attractions. It is open all year round.
With a population of just over 130,000 the Isle of Wight offers an excellent quality of life in a vibrant community. The island has long been a popular tourist resort with fine beaches and beautiful countryside and two of the islands most impressive natural attractions are just to the west of the River Yar.
Over half the island is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the estuaries National Nature Reserves and a heritage coastline. In the 16th century Henry VIII caused fortifications to be built at Cowes, Sandown and at Yarmouth and only those at Yarmouth survive in their entirety. Yarmouth itself is one of the oldest towns on the island and is set around a square with a market once a month.
