Withnell was originally called Withinhulle in the 12th century and lies about six miles northeast of Chorley and about five miles from Blackburn. There are good country walks near Withnell Plantation through woods and past reservoirs and some good fishing with the Withnell Angling Club. Withnell Nature Reserve follows the old railway line where there are wild flowers, trees and heathers planed in the 12 acre reserve,
