Retirement Properties Spotlight in Penwortham

Penwortham was mentioned in Domesday as Peneverdant with a castle, half a fishery, woodland and hawk's eyeries. It is thought its name is derived from 'pen' meaning a hill or enclosure and the site of the Norman castle is in Higher Penwortham. The town lies on the south bank of the River Ribble at the most westerly crossing point opposite Preston and has a good range of shops including two supermarkets. The leisure centre is to be found in  Penwortham Priory. Communications are good with access to Preston via the 'new' Penwortham Bridge.
