Arnside : Arnside is an attractive village on the Kent estuary with a sandy and shingle beach and when the tide is out vast mud-flats to the east are exposed. It is popular with walkers with many descending from the local railway station, not just ornithologists, but others keen to follow the footpaths and bridle ways on Arnside Knott.
The name Arnside probably comes from 'hill or headland of a man called Arnulfr'. Nearby is the ruined peel tower of Arnside, shown on Speed's 17th century map, and to the south the salt marshes below Silverdale. The railway viaduct near the pier gives access to Grange-over-Sands and the Lake District.
