Haywards Heath is an attractive country town lying for the most part just above the main east-west route in the south, the A272 which connects Winchester with Heathfield. The name derives from 'enclosure with a hedge' and the addition of Heath is first recorded in the sixteenth century when Lindfield to the north was much the larger settlement.
