Haywards Heath is an attractive country town lying for the most part just above the main east-west route in the south, the A272 which connects Winchester with Heathfield. The name derives from 'enclosure with a hedge' and the addition of Heath is first recorded in the sixteenth century when Lindfield to the north was much the larger settlement. There are several notable houses in the area to visit as well as National Trust Gardens nearby including Wakehurst Place and Sheffield Park.
