Wareham is an old fortified Saxon burgh mentioned in the Burghal Hidage in the early 10th century and developed to defend Saxon territory. The burgh walls at Wareham are particularly impressive and can still be seen and are of a considerable size. Wareham as a permanent settlement had a market and the four principal streets meet in the form of a cross. The town has a number of attractive Georgian houses and parts of St Martin's church date from the 11th century.
