Maulden is mentioned in Domesday as Meldone and had a mill and belonged in part to the nuns of Elstow and Countess Judith, niece of William the Conqueror. It is a small village about one and a half miles from the larger centre of Amphill. The church of St Mary the Virgin was restored in the 19th century and in the churchyard is a 17th century mausoleum built by Thomas, Earl of Elgin.
