Market Drayton is an attractive town just above the River Tern and immediately west of the Shropshire Union Canal. It is famous for being where Clive of India was born and has a fine fourteenth century church the tower of which Lord Clive was supposed to have climbed when a boy. He is buried nearby at Moreton Say. There are many half-timbered and Georgian houses lining the streets amongst the shops and a market is still held every Wednesday.
With the Duchy of York owning many estates in the county the Wars of the Roses were never far away and two miles east of the town just off the A53 is Audley's Cross commemorating the battle fought here in 1459.
