Gloucester was known as Glouuecestre in Domesday and had its abbey, five fisheries and a mill. It was once a fortified Roman city and their base for an assault on Wales. As the lowest crossing point on the Severn it became an important centre in Saxon times. The magnificent abbey was begun in the 11th century and after the Dissolution of the Monasteries was designated a cathedral. Its most famous tomb is that of Edward II. In the Middle Ages the city was the commercial outlet for the counties bordering the river and there are many attractive period buildings.
Situated on the River Severn Gloucester was always an inland port important for trade in iron and later the cloth industry ultimately declining with the rise in importance of Bristol. Today the city still has 14 warehouses which are part of a vibrant tourist and shopping centre. The Three Choirs music festival takes place every three years.
