Witney has good shopping with several large superstores and many specialist shops, boutiques, inns and cafes. The town is about ten miles west of Oxford at the southern edge of the Cotswolds where the River Windrush has its source.
HISTORY
Witney was once famous for its weaving industry and the Domesday Book records that there were at least two mills here in 1085. It was then known as Witenie and derived its name from 'island or dry ground in marsh of a man called Witta'.
Although cloth making began in the 15th century the traditional blanket making started in the 17th century and this brought much prosperity to the town as can be seen by the rich merchants houses still standing round the green. The merchants used to meet at the Old Blanket Hall which dates from the early 18th century and has an unusual one-handed clock.
