Thirsk is mentioned as Tresc in Domesday meaning that it belonged to the King. Roger Mowbray built a castle here in the 12th century which was then destroyed by Henry II. The town lies at the foot of the Hambleton Hills about eight miles south of Northallerton. There are several inns, notably the Golden Fleece, built in the 18th century testifying to the towns prosperity as a coaching station before the arrival of the railways.
