Lyndhurst : Lyndhurst is mentioned in Domesday as Linhest and probably derived its name from 'wooded hill growing with lime trees'. It is a small market town and administrative centre of the New Forest and about ten miles south-west of Southampton. Some of the trees today are more than 600 years old with girths exceeding 21 feet. The forest officials who have protected the game since Norman times are known as Verderers and hold court in the ancient Verderers' Hall in the town. The Hall dates from the 14th century when it became part of the royal hunting lodge popular in the 17th century.
The 19th century church of St Michael and All Angels is in Victorian Gothic style and well known for having work by Leighton, Burke-Jones and Millais and in the churchyard is the grave of Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland.
