Caterham was once a small village and with the coming of the railways expanded considerably in the nineteenth century and is now a small town with good local shopping and facilities. It is situated just off the A22 between Croydon and East Grinstead, approximately 19 miles to the south of Central London and 15 miles from Gatwick Airport. Gravelly Hill to the south of the town and just above the M25 motorway is a good viewpoint that takes in the ancient Pilgrims' Way on its way to Kent.
Frequent train services are available from Coulsdon South and Caterham railway stations. The quickest services to London Victoria and London Bridge are from Coulsdon South which take approximately 30 and 23 minutes respectively.
