HISTORY

The market town of Ringwood is to the west of the New Forest and was mentioned in Domesday as having two mills and a church. It is thought the name derives from 'wood of the Regni'. There are many fine buildings including Monmouth House named after the 1st Duke of Monmouth who was arrested nearby at Horton after the Battle of Sedgemoor in the 17th century. Ringwood was traditionally the major agricultural centre for the western march of the New Forest but since the closure of its cattle market in the 20th century it has become a residential town. Today the town is still home to the Ringwood Brewery which has five pubs in the local area. The Alice Lisle near to Moyles Court was named after the lady who was executed for harbouring two men after the battle of Sedgemoor. It continues to be a busy market town as it was in the sixteenth century before its neighbour Bournemouth existed.
