Two Tree island to the west is the site of a national nature reserve and Prittlwell Priory, founded in the 12th century, is now a museum surrounded by parkland to the north-east of the town centre. Southend has the longest pier in the world with a minature railway and is popular with fishermen. At low tide the sea goes out for more than a mile.
