Bannatyne Cottages were built in the middle of the 19th century and consist four studio and one-bedroom properties.

Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service.

Aldham was mentioned in Domesday as Aldeham and belonged to the Bishop of Bayeux. The area has long been settled with evidence of Iron Age artefacts found nearby. St Marys Church is a Grade II listed building and was moved to its present site in the 19th century. It has a distinctive round tower. These are quite common in East Anglia but unusual in the rest of the country - possibly built for defensive reasons but probably because of the lack of suitable building stone and flint was 'free'. The village lies about four miles west of Colchester.
