Warminster lies to the southwest of Salisbury Plain at the head of the Wylye valley in an area long settled. The town was known as Guerminstre in Domesday and 'Worgemynster' in Saxon times when it was a Royal Manor. Its name probably derives from 'church of the River Were'. In the Middle Ages the town developed a corn market which lasted well into the 18th century the profits of which provided many fine Georgian houses.
