Gillingham is the most easterly of the Medway towns and faces the estuary for most of its length. Mentioned in Domesday as belonging to the Archbishop of Canterbury it had a church, two mills and three fisheries.

Today it is still the commercial centre of the region connected as it is to Chatham and the naval dockyards founded by Henry VIII in the sixteenth century. Gordon of Khartoum is remembered in the Royal Engineers Museum in the suburb of Brompton.
