Kirkleatham was mentioned in Domesday as Weslide or Westlidun and was a small settlement at the time. The village came to notice in the 17th century when the Lord Mayor of London founded the local hospital. Later the family continued to develop the estate providing a free school in the early 18th century and a library and the hospital becoming almshouses. The Free School became Kirkleatham Old Hall Museum and is the local heritage museum for the area with gardens and grounds open all year round. The village lies about three miles south of the coastal town of Redcar which has shops and a railway station.
