Ringwood is mentioned in Domseday as Rincvede with two mills and a church. Today it is a busy market town situated on the banks of the River Avon to the south of the main A31 Poole trunk road. The site of Ringwood's ancient cattle market is now home to the Furlong Shopping Centre, a modern mall containing a wide variety of shops and boutiques. Several of the town's old buildings have been converted to modern uses including the 18th century brewery and next door Frampton's Mill now an open air cafe.

The weekly market held on a wednesday remains extremely popular and Waitrose is close to the centre of the town. The leisure centre has a 25 metre pool, a main sports hall, three squash courts and a fitness suite. Jubilee Gardens, one of the larger parks, has hard and grass tennis courts and a bowling green.
