Abingdon is about six miles south of Oxford and is an old town having prospered during the Roman period and growing up around the Abbey which was built in the late seventh century. The Abbey had substantial land holdings in the area and the town's name comes from 'Aebba's Hill'. All that is left of the Benedictine Abbey is the Long Gallery, Checker Hall and the 15th century gatehouse attached to te medieval church of St Nicholas.

The town was the county town of Berkshire until the 19th century and in the Market Place stands the County Hall built by Christopher Kempster, one of Wren's masons. There are many attractive walks along the Thames and through the old Abbey gardens. Communications are good with the main north-south route (A34) passing just to the west of the town.
