Groombridge Place Almshouses consists of 12 one bedroom bungalows built in 1993 for retired local residents of limited means. Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service and gardens. Newbury is mentioned in Domesday as having two mills and its history goes back to the Romans but it is largely known for its divisions in the Civil War culminating in two battles there. Donnington Castle stands bereft to the north of the town. The town's most famous patron was John Smallwood who led over a hundred men at the battle of Flodden in 1513. John Smallwood, also known as Jack of Newbury, did much for the town and was reckoned to be extremely wealthy through the cloth trade.
