Twickenham probably derived its name from 'Twicca's river-bend land' and lies north of the curving River Thames about two miles southwest of Richmond. It became a fashionable London resort in the early 18th century with Alexander Pope being one of its more famous residents. The rugby ground was built in the early 19th century and Twickenham is the headquarters of the English Rugby Football Union. The Royal Military School of Music is at Kneller Hall once the home of Sir Godfrey Kneller.
