HISTORY

In the 16th century Horsham was considerably larger than its neighbour Crawley but the later was granted 'new town' status after the Second World War and expanded very quickly thereafter.

The famous 16th century charitable foundation of King Edward VI, Christ's Hospital, the Bluecoat School, moved to its present site from the City of London in the early 1900's. The schools theatre is open to the public with a varied programme throughout the year. Both Percy Bysshe Shelley and Hammond Innes were born in Horsham.

The nearby town of Horsham is the nearest town in the area and mixes the old with the new having extensive shopping and entertainment facilities as well as excellent restaurants, inns and surgeries, a library and a hospital. It has a traffic free centre. There are several old buildings mixed in with the new and the Causeway is well known. A 16th century black-and-white museum here contains the local museum. There are also sporting facilities and a leisure centre. The rolling hills of the South Downs and the High Weald provide excellent walking country.
