Devizes is an old market town on the edge of the Salisbury Plain and probably derives its name from 'place at the boundaries' referring to the Hundreds of Cannings and Potterne which ran through the old castle. The original castle was destroyed in the Civil War and the present one is 19th century. The town has a long wide High Street with several Georgian houses, an old market cross and the Bear Hotel. Churches of most denominations are within easy reach and market days are Thursday and Saturdays in the town square.
