Ilford  was known as Ilefort in Domesday and had a mill and a fishery. Its name seems to derive from 'ford over the River Hyle'. In this part of Essex there are several small rivers running into The Thames and towns grew up at fords such as Ilford and Romford though the later was much the larger in the 17th century. Ilford became famous for Ilford Films founded in the 19th century and through being the highest navigable point on the River Roding achieved early commercial success at the start of the twentieth century.
