Maidstone has long been an important administrative centre and was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Meddstane belonging to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Its name probably derives from 'stone of the maidens'. Today it is still a thriving centre on the River Medway and remains the chief market place for the agricultural produce of the area. The Archbishops stables, near the former country palace of the archbishops of Canterbury, is now the Tyrwhitt Drake museum of horse-drawn carriages.
