Exeter is the county town of Devon and was an important west country centre before the Romans came when it was called Exanceaster - 'Roman town on the River Exe'. Regularly sacked by the Danes it later flourished as a port with continental trade until the Countess Of Devon famously built a weir across the river. The town suffered considerable wartime damage but some of the old buildings around the cathedral precinct survived. The beautiful cathedral is reputed to have the longest span of unbroken Gothic rib vaulting and is also noted for magnificent roof bosses.?

Heavitree  used to be a small village on the outskirts of Exeter and appears in Domesday as Hevetrove. In the 19th century the village was subsumed by Exeter and with the growing population in the 20th century Heavitree Pleasure Ground was first opened as a childrens' playground and today has many leisure facilities. Communications are excellent with the M5 and A30 trunk road nearby.
