The Anchorage is situated close to shops in Great George Street and consists of 33 flats with access also off Park Street. South of the river mouth and within Portland Harbour are the remains of Sandsfoot Castle built in the 16th century. In the 17th century John Endicott sailed from here to found Salem in Massachusetts. The railway reached Weymouth in the 19th century and today ferries serve the Channel Islands and Cherbourg.
