Skipton was mentioned in Domesday as Scipton and belonged to the King. Its name is thought to derive from 'schap' - an old nordic word for sheep and every year a special 'sheep day' is held. The town is set in a valley that slices through the Airedale moors at the southern edge of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park. There are many places to visit including Skipton Castle - home of the Clifford family for many years and besieged for three years during the Civil War. Just outside the town is the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway and the start of the Leeds - Liverpool canal.
