Pickering is an ancient settlement dating back to the third century BC. It is mentioned as Picheringha in Domesday and has the remains of a well-preserved Norman Castle on the north side of the town. Its name is possibly derived from 'the family or followers of a man called Picer' and is found on the south side of the North York Moors in the Vale of Pickering. The castle is reputed to have been used by English monarchs up until the 15th century. Today Pickering is an attractive market town with a good range of shops and several museums and a church with 15th century frescoes.
