Wokingham was quite a reasonable sized town in the sixteenth century according to Speed's Tudor Atlas but still smaller than its neighbour Reading. It was once famous for its silk industry and its bell foundary. The town has expanded considerably in recent years but has retained its market town atmosphere and still today has many half timbered houses and some fine Georgian properties in Rose Street and Broad Street.

The town is well placed to take advantage of the road and rail network in the south of England. It is about eight miles from Reading and two miles from Bracknell. The M4 at Junction 10 is about three miles and fast trains to London ( Paddington) take about an hour.
