Olney : Olney is an attractive small market town on the River Ouse It was mentioned in Domesday as Olnei and had one of the largest mills in the district. Its name derives from 'Olla's island or dry ground in a marsh'. The poet William Cowper lived and worked here at the invitation of the eccentric evangelist John Newton. The town is famous today for its panacke race on Shrove Tuesday from the Market Place to the church of St Peter and St Paul. The church has a much admired early 14th century decorated tower rising above the much restored nave and chancel by the architect George Gilbert Scott.
