Dawlish is a small town situated above steep cliffs just below the Exe estuary. It has been suggested that the town's name may come from Deawlise which is Celtic for 'Devil Water'. The town grew originally with salt making and fishing eventually becoming a popular resort in the 19th century especially after the coming of the railways. The town has many fine Victorian and late Georgian houses and the railway line is well known to have some of the most beautiful views on the south coast.
