HISTORY

Eastbourne is mentioned in Domesday as having a mill, fishery and sixteen salt-houses and no doubt there were salt workings on these coasts since prehistoric times. It owes its respectability to the 7th Duke of Devonshire who laid out the promenade and developed much of the coastal area.

The town expanded largely as a result of the Victorians and the fashion for sunny resorts in the nineteenth century. The many beautiful parks and gardens were laid out to absorb the influx of visitors and today they remain as a testament to the Victorians ingenuity for genteel town planning.

The long beach is mainly shingle and the Wish Tower gardens are named after the Martello tower which is now a museum dedicated to the Napoleonic Wars.

Eastbourne is very much an elegant creation of the early nineteenth century with Victorian terraces and squares leading to a three mile esplanade. The town has many splendid public gardens and parks. Meads Road is close to the Old Town and from Compton Park and the Golf Course you can walk over the downs to the Long Man of Wilmington at Windover Hill. The Downs from the west come to an abrupt end to the west of Eastbourne and it is the high white cliffs off Beachy Head for which Eastbourne is famous.
