Emden House is a sheltered housing scheme consisting of 25 self-contained flats completed in 1981 and close to the centre of Headington. Of the 25 flats 12 are single person and eight have one bedroom and five have both a double and a single bedroom. The single flats vary in size. It is a strict rule of the Association that applicants must be capable of living completely independent lives within Emden House, and having reasonable expectation of being able to do so for the forseeable future.

Emden House is situated off Barton Lane on the northern edge of Headington adjoining Bury Knowle Park. The flats either look southwards over the park or northwards with views towards Beckley and Elsfield. All the flats facing north also have windows opening to the east or west. Local shops including banks, post office, chemist are about a quarter of a mile away on the London Road from where there is a regular bus service to Oxford. There is a library in Bury Knowle Park.

There is a scheme manager and emergency alarm system, laundry room, garden and grounds and a small library. There is also a restaurant providing lunch throughout the year for those residents who wish to take it, and their friends, and there is also a guest bedroom which can be reserved by residents.

Oxford is world famous as an ancient university town on the Thames. The city name means 'ford of the Oxen' and was strategically important throughout the middle ages. The city has numerous buildings of outstanding merit and remains Mathew Arnold's city of 'dreaming spires'.

Two of the earliest buildings are the towers of St Michael and St George and the latter was part of the Norman castle and the remains of its motte can still be seen opposite Nuffield College. The colleges have a distinctly recognisable form being built around lawned quadrangles with halls and chapels. The Bodleian Library, one of the oldest and most famous in the world, was opened in 1602 and the Ashmolean in the 1840s.

Today Oxford remains a magnate for academic endeavor and is visited from all over the world. The
