Royston developed at a crossroads on the northern slopes of the Hertfordshire Chalk Downs where the old Icknield Way crossed the Roman road of Ermine Street. It is thought that a stone cross erected by a woman called Rohesia gave the town its first name. With its good communications the town soon expanded and the fine Georgian houses testify to its prosperity in the 18th century. Today it is by-passed by the M11.
