Sutton Veny is a small village on the River Wylye mentioned in Domesday as Sudtone and had two mills. Sutton is a common place-name and means farmstead or village. The village lies about two miles south-east of Warminster.

Warminster was known as Guerminstre in Domesday and 'Worgemynster' in Saxon times when it was a Royal Manor. Its name probably derives from 'church of the River Were'. In the Middle Ages it developed a corn market which lasted well into the 18th century the profits of which provided the town with some fine Georgian houses. In the twentieth century Warminster became a garrison town.
