HISTORY

In the sixteenth century Henry VIII caused fortifications to be built at Cowes, Sandown and at Yarmouth and only those at Yarmouth survive in their entirety.

The magnificent Osborne House overlooking the Solent on the Isle of Wight was renowned as the favourite family retreat of Queen Victoria who bought it in 1845. It was subsequently left to the nation.

Yarmouth is a delightful seaside town with a small square and good local shops. It is one of the oldest towns on the island and there is a market once a month. There are excellent safe beaches and many attractive walks in the beautiful countryside. The island has several golf courses.

With a population of just over 129,000 the Isle of Wight offers an excellent quality of life in a vibrant community. The island has long been a popular tourist resort with fine beaches and beautiful countryside. Over half the island is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with nearly thirty miles of shoreline designated ‘Heritage Coast‘.

Cowes has been home to The Royal Yacht Squadron since 1833 and to the largest annual maritime sporting event in the UK, where almost 1000 yachts take part: Cowes Week was first held in 1812 and the current eight-day event has been running since 1826.

The island has long attracted famous writers, including Tennyson, Keats and Dickens, inspired by the landscape.
