The Meads was completed in 1992 and consists of 39 flats on three storeys off Green Lane to the west of the town centre. Facilities include a resident manager and emergency alarm system, residents' lounge, guest facilities, laundry and communal car park. Windsor was mentioned in Domesday as Windesores and had a fishery. Its name comes from 'bank or slope with a windlass' and the original settlement is about a mile and a half from 'Windsor'. The town is well known for its castle though of course the castle came first and the town grew up to service the needs of the royal residence, second only to Buckingham Palace. It is England's premier castle and the largest inhabited castle in the world. St Georges Chapel with its renowned fan-vaulted ceiling is the resting place of eight Kings. The town has many old streets which tend to become fairly crowded in the summer months.
