Facilities include a visiting manager and emergency alarm service, lift, communal lounge, laundry and guest facilities. There is parking within the development. Harrogate is about 12 miles north of Leeds and was the most fashionable spa in northern England in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The town is famous for its crocuses which in the Spring can be seen on the Stray - a 200 acre common from which a path links the Valley Gardens with Harlow Carr Gardens; now part of the Royal Horticultural Society following the merger with the Northern Horticultural Society in 2001. The gardens stand on what was once the part of the Forest of Knaresborough, an ancient royal hunting ground and springs of sulphur were discovered here in 1743. The beneficial properties of the waters first came to light in the seventeenth century and as the curative powers grew so did the town. The Royal Baths opened in 1897 and quickly became one of the largest hydrotheraphy establishments in the world. Today Harrogate is an elegant flourishing town with wide open spaces, excellent shops, and many fine Victorian and Edwardian houses. There are frequent local bus and train services giving easy access to the nearby cities of Leeds and York.
