Leicester is situated on the River Soar and was mentioned in Domesday as Ledecestre and had six churches and two mills. The area had long been settled and the Romans established the Celtic settlement as a walled station known as Ratae Coritamorum. Cardinal Wolsey died in Leicester Abbey in 1530 and the remains of this building now form part of Cavendish House Abbey Park.
