Woodhall Spa lies about 15 miles south-east of Lincoln on the edge of the Fens and possibly derives its name from 'hall in the wood'. It largely came into existence through the discovery of saline water in the early 19th century and Woodhall soon developed into a Spa town with wide tree-lined avenues and some imposing Victorian and Edwardian villas. The coming of the railways in the middle of the century brought further prosperity. The popularity of the Spa eventually declined in the early 20th century and when the railway closed finally stopped being used. Woodhall Spa continues to attract summer visitors and the golf course is reputedly one of the best in the country.
