Northenden : Northenden is about six miles south of Manchester on the south bank of the River Mersey which forms part of the Mersey Valley Trail. The area has long been settled and Northenden is mentioned in Domesday and its name probably derives from 'northern dale or valley'. In the 14th century a weir crossed the Mersey at this point and the village prospered in Medieval times due to its prominent position on the Salt Road from Cheshire to Manchester. Today there are a good range of shops and amenities.
