Mildmay Almshouses consists of six one-bedroom cottages built in 1758 and renovated in 1967. The charity looks after Chelmsford residents in housing need who are reasonably fit and mobile. Facilities include estate management services. Chelmsford is the county town of Essex and an old Saxon settlement first founded by the Romans in the first century AD who called it Caestaromagus'. In Moulsham south of the town centre the remains of a mansion were found and also the ruins of an octagonal temple. In Broomfield to the north of the town centre an important Anglo-Saxon burial ground was discovered. History: Mentioned as Celmeresfort in Domesday Chelmsford probably derived its name from 'Ceolmaer's ford' and at the time belonged to the Bishop of London. In the 12th century a later Bishop was granted a Royal Charter to hold a market and an under-cover market is still an important part of the town centre 800 years later. In the Middle Ages it became an important market town and remains a major administrative and commercial centre for the area. The town museum has numerous exhibits from the Roman period to the Victorians.
